First forecast for 2008

Welcome to the first Snowatch Long Range Forecast for 2008. Below I will give my thoughts as to what I see for the Australian snow resorts this season.

I see more moisture around than the last few seasons which should mean more snow and better potential for consistent larger falls of snow. There will also be more chance of rain periods with moisture being dragged down from the north at times, but overall more snow than rain.

With the SOI (Southern Oscillation Index) readings coming down from the high positives earlier this year I see the large high pressure systems weakening a little earlier than normal, which will allow the stronger lows from the SW to reach the mountains from around mid-late May. I see good signs for cool weather and early season snowfalls.

Overall I see a good season with consistent regular snowfalls through to July with August bringing quite a lot of snow. To compare to previous years I would say it will be the best since 2004 with the Spencers Creek snow depth reaching the 2m mark.

Ofcourse these are just my personal views from following various weather charts, trends and data and nothing above can be guaranteed, but I can say it’s highly unlikely that we will see a bad snow season.
